Alka Dass. Transdisciplinary artist based in Durban, South Africa.
I strings beads of storytelling, myth, memory, trauma and identity through the lens of belonging and migration. These themes present themselves through cyanotypes, thread, found materials, personal family archives, and modes of making that are often glossed over as craft or as dated feminine pastimes. Weaving the quiet and quotidian, my tapestries aim to tap into the realm of the mythical and symbolic as a tool for exploring the hidden depths of the mind and unlocking the secrets of the subconscious.
